Jean-Benoît Dunckel, (b. 7 September 1969 in Versailles, Île-de-France; France), is a musician best known for being in the electronica duo Air.[1]

Working under the name "Darkel", Dunckel released his debut solo album, Darkel, in September 2006 ("dunkel" is the German word for "dark").

In April 2009, a concert was held in Paris to launch the release of MaJiKer's debut album Body-Piano-Machine with guest vocalist Camille and a DJ set from Jean-Benoît Dunckel from Air.[2]

In the 1980s, he formed the band Orange with Nicolas Godin, Alex Gopher and Xavier Jamaux. He studied mathematics and physics and taught at a college in Paris, before embarking on a career as a professional musician. Since 1995, he has been one of two members of the electronic band Air, the other is Nicolas Godin.

Jean-Benoît Dunckel, a mathematician studying in Versailles (France), first began a working partnership with Nicolas Godin in the indie band Orange. When Orange failed to make headway, the two continued working together as Air, specializing in retro-flavored electronic music.
